Heavy menstrual bleeding can cause embarrassment, unhappiness and even restlessness. Depending on the cause of the problem, it can be treated with over the counter medicines, hormonal treatment, nutritional changes and surgery.

Lets look at the causes and  treatment together.
     CAUSES AND TREATMENT
v     Heavy menstrual bleeding can be caused  by hormonal imbalance. This occurs when there is deficiency or excess particularly in  progesterone and estrogen.
v     It is most common with adolescents who recently began their periods and women getting close to menopause. It can be treated with oral progesterone, contraceptive pill or hormonal intrauterine device however, only progesterone pills are the only pill that does not restrict you from getting pregnant. Excess hormone can cause also heavy bleeding so its good to you see your doctor for right diagnosis.
v     Fibroids or non cancerous tumors of the uterus, miscarriages or ectopic pregnancy can also cause it. If  someone is diagnosed of  having heavy bleeding  caused by these, surgical options are used to treat it. Hysterectomy; it’s a procedure where thin surgical camera is fed into the uterus to determine if the excess bleeding is caused by fibroid, polyps or other tumors Endometrial ablation resections are similar procedure  where the lining of the uterus is removed with ablation and endometrial lining is obliterated but in resection the lining is removed with a wire loop.Dillation and curettage[DC] is where the doctor dilates the cervix  scrapes the lining of the uterus. Its a bit simpler than others. all these can be used to treat it but they reduce the chances of pregnancy.
v     Use of blood thinners  medications can worsen it so do not take them eg aspirin.motivin, advil, ibuprofen but  non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs can help reduce bleeding.
v     Nutritional deficiency  and stress can cause very heavy menstrual bleeding. In other to treat it you should combat stress and make some nutritional changes. Try and increase your intake of iron and vitamin k rich foods and also go for vitamin k and iron supplementation it will help too.
v     Problem with a non hormonal intrauterine device used for birth control and pelvic inflammatory disease can also cause it.Its good to see your doctor for right diagnosis before treatment.
